A wooden side gate that works for your Los Altos home.

A side gate should close easily and leave enough room for the things you carry through it. We install manual wooden gates in Los Altos. The standard option is 6 ft high × 4 ft wide; unusual openings and different materials are reviewed with you before the work is confirmed.

Check where the gate sits before choosing the design.

A Los Altos side passage and a street-facing entrance can call for different gate designs. Fence placement and height rules still need checking where the gate meets the fence, especially at the front of the property. Tell us whether your gate serves a backyard path or a driveway, and send a photo showing the street-facing setting if it is near the frontage. Los Altos Planning can confirm the requirements for your address.

Measure the clear opening, not the old gate leaf.

Measure between the supporting posts and tell us what needs to pass through: bins, a mower or garden equipment. A 4 ft gate leaf and a 4 ft usable opening are not automatically the same. We check hardware and post placement before confirming the fit.

Give the gate room to open and latch.

Show us paving, steps, bushes and anything that sits behind the gate. Note the direction you want it to swing and whether the ground rises beneath the opening. Clearance needs to work through the full swing, not just when the gate is closed.

Check the supports before matching the boards.

A gate that drags may have a leaning post or worn hinges. Photograph the hinge side, latch side and the bottom of each post. We review the support condition along with the leaf so a new gate is not hung on a post that needs attention.

Before you book

Is this an automatic or driveway gate?

This page and the quick estimate cover manual wooden pedestrian gates. A wide driveway opening or an automatic gate needs a separate consultation, rather than the standard side-gate estimate.

Can you match my garden fence?

We can discuss the board pattern and finish on the call. Pressure-treated wood is the standard option; cedar, redwood and custom finishes are quoted to suit the project.

Do I have to enter a gate height and width?

No. The tool assumes a standard gate 6 ft high × 4 ft wide and asks how many gates you need. Tell us about a different opening or a pool barrier before confirming work; those require a specific scope review.

Tell us what needs work.

Start with your project type, fence length or number of standard gates, and city. The tool collects your contact details so we can email the estimate and follow up to confirm the work.

The free tool is a starting estimate for standard pressure-treated wood and the listed dimensions. We confirm measurements, access and the agreed scope before work. Other woods, styles, heights and nonstandard openings need a separate quote.
